About Open Spaces
(Friday, February 13th)

Back by popular demand! Open Spaces is open to anyone, and everyone can suggest or present topics using a simple, low-tech method of topic suggestion and voting. The simple principles guarantee that everyone is in the right place, listening to exactly what they want to hear.
This is the time for you to get to the heart of what you want to learn. Attendees of these events often describe them as the best conferences they have ever attended!

Open Spaces process

All of the sessions will take place in a single room, in a ring of chairs with limited or no presentation media. People are encouraged to move around, walking away from a discussion that bores them and finding something that seems interesting. Remember: a group of 5 interested people is more valuable than 50 bored people.

During the time leading up to the Open Space Sessions, a page (or whiteboard) will be made available, listing all the discussions that people want to hear, participate in or present. Participants can add or vote for a discussion that they are interested in.

Close to the start time, the top topics are sorted into the available venues and time slots. As the time approaches, details as to which talks are happening in which venue, and how many people (roughly) will attend will emerge.

Similar topics can be combined; topics with little or no interest can be scrapped, or if the few interested people want to, a new venue can spring up. In Open Spaces, a venue could be 5 chairs in a circle in the corridor or the kitchen.

Sessions start at roughly the suggested time, but finish when they finish. That could be 10 minutes if everyone feels they have had enough, or just in time for the next session (if there is one).

These are interactive discussions. The chairs are arranged in a circle with a single or double row depending on size. No one is in front; if someone wants to show their laptop they can do so on their lap in the circle, or on a projector if there is one available, and hands-on sessions can be done on laps too. USB memory sticks can be passed around to share information; flip charts can be used for ad hoc scribbling, but this is not a lecture, and talking over a slide deck is discouraged.

During Open Spaces, we encourage the four basic principles:

is interested is the “right person” for the session
the group decides to discuss is the “agenda”
it starts is the start time, and discussions can go until they’re finished
When it’s over,
it is over – move to the next topic of interest
